What to Expect on Your IELTS Test Day at CM Training Institute’s Official IELTS Test Centre

What to Expect on Your IELTS Test Day at CM Training Institute’s Official IELTS Test Centre

Taking the IELTS exam can feel overwhelming, especially if it is your first time. You may have questions such as: What should I bring? When should I arrive? What happens when I get to the test centre? How does the computer-based test work? What happens during the Speaking test?

Knowing what to expect can make a big difference.

At CM Training Institute (CMTI), we understand that IELTS success is about more than just studying English. It is also about being familiar with the test format, managing your time effectively and walking into the exam room with confidence.

As an official IELTS test centre, CMTI provides candidates with a professional and secure environment for taking their IELTS examination. We also offer IELTS preparation and training to help candidates get ready before the big day.

Here is what you can expect on your IELTS test day.

1. Arrive Early at the Test Centre

Your IELTS journey on test day starts with arriving at the test centre on time.

Your booking confirmation will provide important information about your test time and procedures. It is important to arrive early enough to complete the necessary registration and security procedures.

Avoid arriving at the last minute. Being in a hurry can increase your anxiety before the examination even begins.

Our advice: Plan your route to CMTI in advance and allow enough time for traffic and registration.

The British Council guidance also emphasizes arriving in good time because candidates who arrive late may not be allowed to take the test.

2. Bring the Correct Identification Document

One of the most important things to remember on your IELTS test day is your identification document.

For candidates in Kenya, you should bring the original National ID card or passport that you used during registration. Student IDs, voters’ cards and driving licences are not accepted as substitutes. Non-Kenyan candidates must present the valid passport used during registration.

Before leaving home, double-check that you have the correct original identification document with you.

3. Your Identity Will Be Verified

Once you arrive at the test centre, your identity will be checked as part of the IELTS security procedures.

Your photograph will also be taken on test day as an additional security measure, and the photograph will appear on your Test Report Form.

These procedures are standard parts of taking IELTS and are designed to protect the integrity and security of the examination.

4. Your Personal Belongings Stay Outside the Test Room

IELTS has strict rules about what candidates can take into the examination room.

Items such as mobile phones, smartwatches, bags, laptops and other personal belongings must be left in the designated secure area.

For the test room, British Council guidance states that candidates may take water in a transparent, unlabelled bottle. Personal electronic devices and watches are not permitted in the test room.

It is therefore a good idea to leave unnecessary valuables at home.

5. Get Comfortable with the Computer-Based IELTS Format

At CMTI, candidates can take their IELTS examination in a computer-based test environment.

For IELTS on computer, the Listening, Reading and Writing sections are completed directly on a computer. You will read questions on the screen and type your answers using the keyboard. The Speaking test remains a live interaction with an IELTS Speaking Examiner, either face-to-face or, depending on the test arrangements, through a video call at an official test centre.

The computer-based format comes with useful features such as an on-screen timer and tools that can help you navigate and manage your answers.

If you are not used to typing under time pressure, don’t worry.

This is one of the reasons IELTS preparation matters.

6. The Test Begins with Listening, Reading and Writing

The IELTS test has four components:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

For the Listening, Reading and Writing components, the order is generally Listening → Reading → Writing. The Listening, Reading and Writing components take approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, with no break between them.

Listening

You will listen to recordings and answer questions based on what you hear.

Before the test begins, make sure you can hear the audio clearly. If you experience any technical or audio problems, notify the invigilator immediately.

Reading

You will read passages and answer a variety of questions designed to assess your reading skills, including your ability to understand main ideas, details, opinions and arguments.

Time management is particularly important here.

Writing

The Writing section requires you to complete two tasks. Your ability to organize ideas, use appropriate vocabulary and grammar, and respond accurately to the task will all contribute to your score.

7. Your Speaking Test

The Speaking test is different from the other sections because it is a live conversation with an IELTS Speaking Examiner.

For IELTS Academic, the Speaking test lasts approximately 11–14 minutes and consists of three parts: questions about familiar topics, an individual long turn and a discussion based on the topic.

Depending on your booking and test arrangements, your Speaking test may take place on the same day as the other sections or on a different day. Your booking confirmation will provide the relevant information.

The key is not to memorize complicated answers.

Instead, focus on expressing yourself naturally, clearly and confidently.

8. What If You Have a Question During the Test?

Don’t panic if you need assistance.

If you experience a technical issue, cannot hear the Listening recording properly or need to use the bathroom, raise your hand and wait for the invigilator’s assistance. Avoid calling out or disturbing other candidates.

Remember: the invigilators are there to help ensure that the examination runs smoothly and according to IELTS procedures.

9. What Happens After You Finish?

When you complete your test, remain seated until the invigilator gives you permission to leave.

If you believe something happened during the examination that may have affected your performance, inform the invigilator immediately.

And once you walk out of the test room, take a breath!

You have done your part.
